Everything You Need to Know

Malaysia offers various visa options, including the convenient eVisa, which allows foreign nationals to apply online. Malaysia is a visa-friendly country, please refer to the Immigration website for visa requirement per country.

Visa Exemptions: Nationals from certain countries, such as China and India, are exempt from visa requirements for tourist purposes until specific dates.

Types of Visas: Malaysia offers different types of visas, including Tourist (Social Visit), Student, Expatriate (Working), and Medical Tourist visas. Conference delegates may opt for tourist visa.

eVisa Process

  • Eligibility: The eVisa is available to nationals from various countries. Please refer to the Immigration website to check if you need a visa.
  • Application: If the answer is yes, the eVisa application is done online at the eVisa portal. Please note that eVisa is not applicable for Israel and North Korea. You will need:
    • A copy of your passport
    • A recent photograph
    • Flight ticket details
    • Hotel booking confirmation
    • A scan of your last visited country’s visa (if applicable)
  • Processing Time: The application process typically takes about 14 working days or longer, suggest delegates apply one month ahead to avoid delays and issues (if any).
  • Validity: The eVisa is valid for 3 months, and the duration of stay per entry varies by nationality, generally up to 30 days.
  • You can apply for the eVisa through the Malaysian Immigration Department's official website at the eVisa Portal

Arrival in Malaysia

Foreign visitors are required to complete the Malaysian Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) before arrival. MDAC is an online system introduced by the Malaysian Immigration Department to streamline the entry process for foreign visitors.

How to Apply

  1. Registration: Visit the official MDAC website and create an account.
  2. Form Submission: Fill out the digital arrival card form with your personal details, travel information, and other required data.
  3. Submission Timeline: Submit the form at least 3 days before your arrival in Malaysia
  4. Confirmation: After submission, you will receive a confirmation email with a reference number. This should be presented upon arrival in Malaysia.

Travelers who have completed the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) can use the autogate system at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, provided they meet certain criteria. They can check the eligibility status HERE. There are 46 countries who are eligible to use the autogate/ e-gate, refer the list here.

Malaysia is now using the QR code clearance system, just like Singapore, Japan, and some European countries, to make immigration faster and more secure.

There are 63 countries whose citizens are eligible to use Malaysia’s autogate immigration system. For those who wish to use the autogates, manual passport verification is required for first-time travellers from these countries (see list here), but subsequent visits allow direct use of the autogate system.

Foreign nationals must still submit the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card as mentioned below, except for Singaporeans who are exempt. Passengers use a QR code generated through the MyBorderPass app instead of manually presenting their passports. At the immigration autogates, they may scan the QR code to verify their identities — no need to hand over your passport but you still need to carry your passport as it's required for the rest of your journey, even if you're using the QR code lanes.

Manual counters and existing automated gates are still available for those who prefer traditional immigration clearance.

The QR code system is available to Malaysian citizens, and citizens of 63 eligible countries, including Australia, Brunei, Canada, China, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, UK, and US.
